I worked for one month in Latvia on its museums and historical architecture. I photographed this image in central Riga, Latvia in February 2017. It shows a Soviet residential building and traditional houses close to a Soviet industrial district and railway.

Riga’s architecture reveals the marked passage of different times: the strong footprint of the Soviet past remains obvious and contrasts with the traditional Latvian wooden dwellings.

Latvia has been economically integrated with the European Union since 1991. In many ways, the country shows its independent spirit proudly, claimed through periods of turmoil and regime change. Unfortunately, inequalities remain obvious.

While wondering the capital, observing the glaring contrasts of the districts, it is notable that: the centre is touristic and modernized, arranged to salute only the Latvian culture, while the peripheral districts -still full of functioning Soviet factories- are connected by ancestral trams.

MUSÉE IMMÉDIAT

Photographing the countries of Eastern Europe in a period of cultural and geopolitical transition

This book deals with the phenomenon of the immediate establishment of situations both transitional and culturally critical (upheaval of borders, manipulation of the cultural and historical past, artistic waves around wars and destructive conflicts) in the countries of Eastern Europe, such as Ukraine, Belarus and Latvia.
